While there’s ample debate about what quarterback Justin Fields can prove over the final seven games of the Chicago Bears season, that chatter isn’t taking place inside the walls of Halas Hall.Yes, coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday that seven weeks “is enough time to show consistency,” but Fields and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy are existing only in the here and now — preparing for Sunday’s game at Ford Field against the first-place Detroit Lions.Just as Fields talked Wednesday about a singular focus, Getsy spoke Thursday of that same approach, giving a measured assessment of the situation as Fields returns after missing four games with a dislocated right thumb. The focus on Fields and the remaining slate is understandable, as the Bears will have to choose a path at the end of the season: roll into 2024 with Fields or move on and draft a quarterback in the first round. It seems rather unlikely general manager Ryan Poles would keep Fields and g...Heavy fighting breaks out around another Gaza hospital after babies evacuated from Shifa

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Heavy fighting erupted Monday around a hospital in northern Gaza where thousands of patients and displaced people have been sheltering for weeks, as Israeli forces focus on clearing out medical facilities that they say Hamas militants use for cover. The advance on the Indonesian Hospital came a day after the World Health Organization evacuated 31 premature babies from Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the territory’s largest, where they were among more than 250 critically ill or wounded patients stranded there days after Israeli forces entered the compound. The plight of Gaza’s hospitals is at the focus of a battle of narratives over the war’s brutal toll on Palestinian civilians, thousands of whom have been killed or buried in rubble since the six-week-old war was sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 rampage into southern Israel. Israel says Hamas uses civilians as human shields, while critics say Israel’s siege and relentless aerial bombar...Severe storms delay search for 12 crew missing after Turkish cargo ship sinks in Black Sea

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Severe storms have delayed a search-and-rescue operation for 12 crew members of a cargo ship that sank off Turkey’s Black Sea coast, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Monday. The Turkish-flagged Kafkametler sank on Sunday after hitting a breakwater outside the harbor off the town of Eregli, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of Istanbul, Yerlikaya told reporters. He said rescue crews were on standby waiting for the weather conditions to ease to begin a rescue mission.“Unfortunately, we could not carry out search-and-rescue activities for the 12 Turkish crew members,” Yerlikaya said. “As soon as conditions improve the search-and-rescue operations will begin immediately.”The severe storms that hit northwestern Turkey caused widespread damage and disruption on Sunday, including the breakup of another cargo ship and the evacuation of a prison. The Cameroon-flagged Pallada “broke into two due to heavy weather conditions” after running aground amid 5-meter (16-foo...Winning streak has p-word is percolating in Broncos locker room despite long odds: “We have playoff aspirations”

The road ahead remains long. The odds aren’t quite in Han Solo territory anymore, but the math still isn’t great. In the moments after Denver’s 21-20, last-minute Sunday night win against Minnesota, however, the Broncos locker room crossed a certain kind of football threshold. The P-word started percolating.Four straight wins will do that.A brutal start to the season feels like ancient history.Success now isn’t measured in just figuring out how to win a game. From here on out, the only real success is figuring out a way to keep playing past the first weekend of January.“When we were 1-5, you’d just beg for anything,” Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen told The Denver Post. “Now we’ve got playoff aspirations and a lot of guys in this locker room have played playoff football and know what it takes. Obviously, we’re happy with the win and you’ll take them, but we’re going to face some really good teams down the stretch and we can’t allow ourselves to keep making those mistake...European Commission calls for urgent action on antimicrobial resistance
Published Fri, 22 Nov 2024 00:51:53 GMT
Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a top priority for the Commission and an integral part of many actions under the European Health Union. Ahead of the European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), new data published today by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows some overall progress between 2019-2022 towards the target to cut antimicrobial use by 20% by 2030. Although the overall longer-term use of antibiotics fell across the EU/EEA between 2019 and 2022, consumption increased again in 2022, as many Europeans resumed their pre-COVID-19 pandemic way of life. A study carried out by the OECD, for the European Commission, warns that AMR costs EU/EEA countries around €11.7 billion a year. If every EU/EEA country invested €3.40 per capita annually on AMR interventions in the human health and food sectors, they could prevent more than 10 thousand deaths, avoid over 600 thousand new infections and save more than €2.5 billion for their health systems every...Stock Market Today: Asian stocks rise following Wall Street’s 3rd straight winning week

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s military warned North Korea not to go ahead with its planned spy satellite launch, suggesting Monday that Seoul could suspend an inter-Korean agreement to reduce tensions and resume front-line aerial surveillance in response. North Korea failed in its first two attempts to put a military spy satellite into orbit earlier this year and didn’t follow through with a vow to make a third attempt in October. South Korean officials said the delay was likely because North Korea is receiving Russian technology assistance and that a launch could happen in coming days.“Our military will come up with necessary measures to protect the lives and safety of the people, if North Korea pushes ahead with a military spy satellite launch despite our warning,” a senior South Korean military officer, Kang Hopil, said in a televised statement.South Korean Defense Minister Shin Wonsik said in an interview with public broadcaster KBS on Sunday the launch was expected la...Los Angeles freeway closed after arson fire set to fully reopen before Monday morning’s rush hour
