MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (AP) — Florida State won every game this season. Georgia won 29 in a row, including back-to-back national championships, then lost by a field goal. And neither was deemed good enough by the College Football Playoff committee.A trip to the Orange Bowl is what two very angry teams will get instead.No. 4 Florida State (13-0 ACC, No. 5 CFP) will play No. 6 Georgia (12-1 SEC, No. 6 CFP) on Dec. 30 in the Orange Bowl after both programs felt like they deserved a chance to play for the national title. The CFP committee decided that the Seminoles were doomed by quarterback Jordan Travis’ broken leg, and dropped Georgia five spots after its loss to Alabama in the SEC title game.“I’m hurting for our players who have displayed a tremendous amount of resilience and response this season,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell said Sunday. “What happened today goes against everything that is true and right in college football. A team that overcame tremendous adversity and found a way...

But the only scoring the Chargers (5-7) could manage was a pair of 38-yard field goals in the second quarter.New England (2-10) made a quarterback switch, benching Mac Jones in favor of Zappe, but still lost its fifth straight game. For the first time in franchise history, the Patriots were shut out at home twice in a season. It was the third time in a row that New England gave up 10 or fewer points — and lost. They are the first team to do that since the 1938 Chicago Cardinals.Zappe was sacked five times — two by Khalil Mack, giving him a career-high 15 for the season and 99 in his career. In all, Zap...

Wild rookie Brock Faber finds new home on the power play

Brock Faber was a team captain, all-American and Big Ten Defenseman of the Year at the University of Minnesota. As a junior, he had four goals and 23 assists, four of the latter in four NCAA tournament games as he helped the Gophers make the 2022-23 national championship final. But in 97 career college games, there is one thing he never did: get a role on the Gophers’ power play.Asked about that during training camp, Faber said part of it was because college players are expected to play more minutes than NHL players, and he was playing the PK. But part of it, he said, was that early in his hockey career “I knew I wasn’t the kind of player who was going to fill up the stat sheet.”Faber, a rookie from Maple Grove, had his first power play point in Sunday afternoon’s 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Xcel Energy Center. He first played on the unit in last Thursday’s 6-1 win at Nashville.“I always knew that I could, right? And I always hoped I would get onto the power play...
