Toronto home sales and prices up from last July, down from June: TRREB TORONTO — The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board says home sales, listings and prices were up in July compared with last year, but activity looks to be slowing in the face of higher interest rates. The board says the 5,250 sales for the month was up 7.8 per cent compared with July 2022, while listings grew 11.5 per cent. The average selling price was up 4.2 per cent in July from a year earlier to $1,118,374, while the benchmark price was up 1.3 per cent. Sales and prices however trended lower from June on a seasonally adjusted basis with sales down 8.8 per cent and the average price down 0.7 per cent. The drop in month-over-month sales in July marked the second month in a row for lower sales, while the July price pullback was the first month since February that saw a retreat. The board says that it seems the sales momentum seen earlier in the spring has somewhat stalled since the Bank of Canada restarted its rate tightening cycle in June. This report by The Canadian Press was first pu...

Selection of Thailand’s new prime minister delayed again, to await court decision on election winner BANGKOK (AP) — A parliamentary vote to select Thailand’s new prime minister expected on Friday was delayed again after a court put off a decision in a case involving the progressive party that won May’s election, adding to growing uncertainty about when a new government can take office. The Constitutional Court on Thursday said it needs more time to deliberate on whether to accept a petition from the state ombudsman on whether it was constitutional for Parliament to bar Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, the surprise election winner, from being nominated as a prime ministerial candidate a second time. The progressive Move Forward Party finished in first place in the May election and assembled an eight-party coalition with 312 seats in the 500-member lower house. But Parliament has struggled to confirm a new prime minister, which requires a majority vote together with the conservative 250-member appointed Senate. Pita’s initial bid last month fell short by more than 50 ...

Trump to face judge in DC in third indictment WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is due in federal court Thursday to answer to charges that he sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election, facing a judge just blocks from the U.S. Capitol that his supporters stormed to block the peaceful transfer of presidential power. In what's by now become a familiar but nonetheless stunning ritual, Trump is expected to be processed by law enforcement, be officially taken into custody and enter a not guilty plea in front of a judge before being released, so he can rejoin the campaign trail as he seeks to reclaim the White House in 2024.An indictment Tuesday from Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith charges Trump with four felony counts related to his efforts to undo the presidential election in the run-up to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. The charges could lead to a yearslong prison sentence i...

Ask Amy: I’m afraid our family reunion will go badly for this teen

Ask Amy: I’m afraid our family reunion will go badly for this teen Dear Amy: Every year my extended family meets for a summer reunion. Two of us are gay. Starting when he was quite young, we assumed that my nephew was also gay. No one talked about it, it was just assumed he’d figure it out and it wouldn’t be a big deal. Two years ago, when he was 16, he started growing and dyeing his hair and wearing nail polish but still referred to himself as “he.” We assumed he was either doing the teenager thing or was about to tell us he was gay.Well, we were wrong. He’s not heterosexual (no shock) but has decided he’s trans and now goes by the gender-neutral name “Ash.”Now Ash is making baby steps into the world as a trans person. To say my family is less than supportive is an understatement.  This includes Ash’s parents. Gay they’re OK with, but I guess trans is a bridge too far.Our annual get-together is coming up, and my plan is to wait and see how Ash refers to themself and take it from there. I’m petrified about how...

A Pro-Putin Facebook Network Is Pumping French-Language Propaganda Into Africa

A Pro-Putin Facebook Network Is Pumping French-Language Propaganda Into Africa As Russia strengthens ties with governments across French-speaking parts of West and Central Africa, social media users in the region have faced a well-documented barrage of pro-Moscow influence campaigns: a swarm of videos, images, and news stories depicting Russia in a positive light — typically at the expense of France, the region’s former colonial power.A report shared with The Intercept shines a light on one such campaign in action — and it appears to be reaching an especially large audience.According to an Intercept review of investigations conducted by the tech watchdog group Reset, a network of 53 Facebook pages has been amplifying French-language videos promoting the Kremlin’s line on the war in Ukraine, starting in March. According to Reset, the pages share the common traits of “coordinated inauthentic behavior,” a term used by Meta, Facebook’s parent company, to describe when pages misrepresent themselves and work together in pursuit of specific political or financial goa...
