Can Utah oil-train project be derailed? Colorado lawmakers, communities hope so

Several Colorado elected officials say federal agencies that approved a plan to run daily crude oil trains from Utah through Glenwood Canyon and Denver shrugged off the potential “downline” impacts and need to take a closer look.Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet and Congressman Joe Neguse have asked the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a supplemental review of the Uinta Basin Railway project to more carefully consider the risks to Colorado communities and the environment, including water and the climate.Several western Colorado cities and counties are lending their support to a consolidated lawsuit by environmental organizations and Eagle County. They contend the environmental analysis of the rail project, which is being pursued by seven eastern Utah counties, is flawed because it glosses over the potential impacts of running as many as five trains carrying up to 350,000 barrels of waxy crude a day through Colorado. The destination would be refineries on the Gulf Coa...San Francisco company relocates its HQ, another feather in Denver’s cap

A company that specializes in making the facilities of some of the country’s largest corporations more energy efficient has moved its headquarters to Denver.Redaptive, which calls itself an energy-as-a-service provider, was formerly based in San Francisco. The company opened an office in the Denver area in 2019 and made the Mile High City its official headquarters in March.“Denver was, I would say, our HQ2 with San Francisco as our primary location,” Redaptive CEO Arvin Vohra said.Making Denver the official headquarters was “a no-brainer decision for us internally,” Vohra said. The office is in the Tabor Center on 17th Street in downtown Denver. In the past few years, companies from across the country and around to the world have relocated their headquarters to Denver. For example, Bay Area company Virta Health moved to Denver last year and as did United Kingdom company Macs Adventure. The city’s commitment to sustainability was a big draw for Redap...Punk icons Carioca Cafe, Wax Trax Records grapple with Denver over live music, noise, licensing

Ig Eels used to watch people flock to shows from his band Drink Drank Punk whenever they play Carioca Cafe, the downtown dive bar that has managed to hang on over the past few years despite being surrounded by luxury construction projects. But without a cabaret license, Carioca Cafe, a.k.a. Bar Bar, can’t allow the punk-rock guitar player and singer’s house band to perform, despite Drink Drank Punk having played more than 100 shows there since 2013, Eels said. In fact, the bar has never had a cabaret license, according to the Department of Excise and Licenses, which is required in order to sell alcohol while hosting live performances. For roughly a year, owner John Kennedy has followed city guidance on replacing and fixing fire code and other violations, from a new front door to patching a hole in the wall and adding a new, lighted exit sign. He applied and paid for a $1,250 cabaret license more than six months ago, as well as reaching out to the Denver City Council for su...Wheat Ridge hopeful for a new retail spark at site of a long-closed Lucky’s Grocery

More than three years after it closed its doors, Lucky’s Market remains a hulking empty box at a prominent corner in Wheat Ridge that has seen its share of drama and delayed promises over the past decade.“We would love to get it occupied tomorrow,” said Steve Art, economic development manager for Wheat Ridge. “We’ve been close on a couple of users but nothing has come to fruition at this point.”In fact, Art said, the developer of The Corners at Wheat Ridge has spoken with no fewer than 11 grocery companies about taking over the empty 35,000-square-foot Lucky’s space at the southwest corner of West 38th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.“It’s an off-size store,” he said. “It’s too small to be an anchor grocery store (like King Soopers). And it’s too big to be a niche store, like a Trader Joe’s-type store.”Boulder-based Lucky’s opened at The Corners in the summer of 2018 to much fanfare, only ...To do in Denver this weekend: Molly Brown memories, XicanIndie FilmFest and Care Bears creator

A federal appeals court late Wednesday night froze parts of a Texas judge’s order that would have suspended the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a medication abortion drug. But the court only partially granted the request by the Justice Department and the drug’s manufacturer to put US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s ruling on hold, with the panel effectively making the drug harder to obtain. The appeals court orders a return to the stricter, pre-2016 FDA regime around the drug, which prevents mailing the pill to patients who obtained it through telehealth, or virtual visits with their providers rather than traveling to a clinic or hospital in person to obtain the drug. The restrictions also affect the instructions on the label for the medication, shortening the window of obtaining the pill to seven weeks into pregnancy as opposed to 10. It’s possible however that even with the ruling in effect, some providers could go “off label” and continue to prescribe mifepristone u...Latest news
